PASSION-BEARER PDF Print E-mail
PASSION-BEARER - One of the various customary saint titles used in commemoration at divine services when remembering saints on the Church Calendar. A passion-bearer is one who faces his death in a Christ-like manner. Unlike martyrs, passion-bearers are not explicitly killed for their Orthodox faith, though they hold to that faith with piety and true love of God. Notable Passion Bearers include the brothers Boris and Gleb, sons of Prince Vladimir of Kiev., Edward the Martyr, Harold of England, Nicholas II of Russia, Panteleimon, and Doulas the Passion-Bearer of Egypt.

The Sayings of the Fathers

Abba Anthony the Great of Egypt: 'Just as fish die if they stay out of water too long, so monks who loiter outside their cells or pass time with men of the world lose the fervor of inner peace. So, like a fish going toward the sea, we must hurry to reach our cell, for fear that if we tarry outside we will lose our interior watchfulness.'
